The Presidio of San Francisco

Visiting The Presidio of San Francisco, which is part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, I found this pair of HAIRY WOODPECKERs... a young juvenile being watched and fed by the adult female at their nest hole.

It's wonderful to observe such wildlife experiences even while inside the city of San Francisco!                 CLICK PHOTO!

MacGillivray's Warbler

Sunday morning field trip with the Santa Clara Valley Audubon Society to the foggy Pacific coast along Gazos Creek about 30 minutes drive north of Santa Cruz. The target birds were MACGILLIVRAY's WARBLER and WILSON'S WARBLER... which were heard often, yet challenging to find today.

The foggy weather cleared a bit by noon, so I returned to where I heard them... success!   CLICK PHOTO!

Gilroy Water Treatment Ponds
Yellow-breasted Chat

Reading the report of a YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT being seen yesterday at the Gilroy Water Treatment Ponds, I was needing a photo of this distinctive wood-warbler... and now success!  An enjoyable morning with glorious views and song from an interacting pair of YELLOW-BREASTED CHATs!

Additional highlights included YELLOW WARBLER, BELTED KINGFISHER, SPOTTED SANDPIPERs, RED-NECKED PHALAROPEs.      CLICK PHOTO!

Bodega Bay Shorebirds!
Bodega Bay Shorebirds!

A great trip 2 hours north of San Francisco to Doran Beach Park at Bodega Bay... where it became a photo bonanza of shorebirds in spring breeding plumages!

Highlights included great views of RED KNOT, MARBLED GODWIT, DUNLIN, SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER, SANDERLING, and even a few SURFBIRDs.   The bonus was a RED-NECKED GREBE... my first observation in California.

Mines Road Birding Trip
Mines Road Birding Trip

Saturday all-day field trip with the Santa Clara Valley Audubon to Stanislaus County and Santa Clara County.   Highlights included great views of LEWIS'S WOODPECKERs on Mines Road, brief views of a COSTA'S HUMMINGBIRD, and a pair of splendid CANYON WRENs in Del Puerto Canyon.

Observed a total of 52 bird species;  but the disappointing miss was not finding any LAWRENCE'S GOLDFINCH.    CLICK PHOTO!

Sacramento Area Birding Trip
Sacramento Area Birding Trip

Spent the day birding in the greater Sacramento area; including Yolo County near Woodland and Davis.

Highlights included YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRDs, and at the Yolo Bypass Wildlife Area there were lots of MARSH WRENs singing in the reeds. On County Road 28H, a BURROWING OWL. In Sacramento, the treat was PURPLE MARTINs!

Thoughts about my Birding LifeLists

My LifeLists are important to me, and I put a lot of care and effort to make sure they are: 1) up-to-date, 2) accurate, 3) honest.

LifeLists mean different things to different people. To some, they are informal listings of which birds they've observed.  To others, they are complete records of what, when, and where every species were experienced.

My LifeLists provide memories to reflect back on past experiences, and promote a goal-oriented objective for new milestones and achievements.

Entries to LifeLists are in accordance with
the five (5) American Birding Association (ABA) Recording Rules.

1 Pix of Every Bird Observed
My Most Challenging (and Fun) Goal
1PixofEveryBird
"Taking a Photo of Every Bird I've Observed in the World"

It's Big!    It's Fun!    Is it Possible?

It's difficult enough to actually FIND and OBSERVE a new bird species... and it's an additonal challenge to actually take a PHOTO too!  It certainly adds a new level of effort and excitement to my birding experiences.  I know it's a never-ending, lifelong quest... but to me, it's really fun... and I'm happy to share my progress with you.

When initially finding a new bird species... my first reaction is to OBSERVE the bird by looking and listening as best as the situation allows... usually via binoculars and/or spotting scope. Then, if I've got my camera with me, my next reaction is to get at least one pix... quickly.  We all know that too often, the observation will be short and brief... the bird is there and then gone.  It's definitely a challenge!  Unfortnately, sometimes I've clearly seen the bird, and I never got a single photo taken.  Other times, the bird will pose gloriously in good light for hours.  That's birding photography!

The photos included in this section fall into one of three categories:

  • 'SLIDESHOW' quality - photos which are sharp, clear, close, stunning... which show the species very well.
These photos are also featured in the Photo Gallery Slideshows.
  • 'SIGHTING'     quality - photos which show the species... but are either distant, poorly lit, unsharp, hidden, etc.
  • 'IT'S A BIRD'   quality - photos which I KNOW are in fact the named species... but the bird is either too distant, too
poorly lit, too blurry, unfocused, etc.  It would be impossible for another person to ID the bird...
                                        but it's a photo I took!

It would be wonderful if every photo was perfect, but that's just not reality!  So some pixs are better than others.
Enjoy the results... of "1 Pix of Every Bird Observed"...  and come back often, hopefully there are new entries!

Go!
